About Portsmouth
Portsmouth is the only island city in the UK, sitting on Portsea Island and joined to the Hampshire mainland by the M275 and the A3 at Hilsea. The PO1-PO6 postcodes cover everything from the historic dockyard and HMS Victory in Old Portsmouth, through the bars and shops of Gunwharf Quays, out to Southsea seafront and the mainland suburbs of Cosham, Paulsgrove, Drayton and Farlington. It is one of the most densely populated urban areas in Europe, and the road network reflects that - tight Victorian terraces feeding onto a handful of arterial routes, all funnelling toward the M27 at the top of the island.
The city is a Royal Navy headquarters, a university city of around 25,000 students, a major Brittany Ferries port for sailings to Caen, St Malo and Bilbao, and the busiest of the three Wightlink crossings to the Isle of Wight. NC Recovery handles regular runs into Portsmouth: drivers stranded after a Solent crossing, students broken down on the way home from university halls, families running late for a ferry sailing, and breakdowns on the M27/A3(M) merge that catch out drivers heading for the seafront.
Key Roads and Routes
- M27. The main east-west motorway across south Hampshire, feeding Portsmouth at junctions 11, 12 (Paulsgrove) and the M275 spur
- A3(M). The motorway-grade route from London via Petersfield, joining the M27 at junction 12
- M275. The short spur from the M27 down into the city, ending at Rudmore roundabout near the Continental Ferry Port
- A27. The coastal trunk road through Cosham, Havant and on to Chichester
- A2030. The eastern ring road linking Eastern Road, Anchorage Park and Farlington
- A288. The seafront route past Southsea Common, Clarence Pier and South Parade Pier
- Continental Ferry Port (Wharf Road). Brittany Ferries, Condor and DFDS sailings
- Wightlink terminal (Gunwharf Road). Car ferry crossings to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight
Recovery to the Portsmouth Ferry Terminals
One of the most common Portsmouth jobs we run is delivering a customer's vehicle to one of the ferry terminals. NC Recovery does not cross to the Isle of Wight - the Wightlink vehicle ferry charges put it well outside what is sensible to pass on - but we will absolutely take your car or van to the terminal so you can drive it on yourself. We do the same for the Brittany Ferries Continental Ferry Port for customers heading to France or Spain. Give us your sailing time on 01722 466784 and we will plan the run with a buffer for M27 traffic, particularly around the Paulsgrove and Cosham junctions which back up at peak times.

Why Local Recovery Matters in Portsmouth
Breakdowns in Portsmouth tend to happen in awkward places - on the M275 spur with nowhere to pull off, in the tight one-way streets around Old Portsmouth and Spice Island, or at the security gates of the Continental Ferry Port with a sailing ticking down. National operators routing from Southampton or Reading can take 90 minutes plus. Coming in from Salisbury via the A36 / M27 we are usually on scene inside 70 minutes, and we know which side of the Tipner roundabout to approach from when the M275 is queued. For step-by-step advice on dual carriageway breakdowns, read our guide to what to do if your car breaks down on a major route.
